CHARLESTON — Among the ever-evolving bills the Legislature is handling during this special session is one to raise money to pay for road work by increasing the fuel tax, the tax on sales of automobiles and various DMV fees.

The special session opened with HB 102/SB 1002; but on May 16, the governor brought forth new versions, HB 108/SB 1006.

HB 108 raises the flat gas tax from 20.5 cents per gallon to 22 cents. It raises the variable tax based on wholesale price from a minimum 11.7 cents per gallon to a minimum 15.2 cents.

The motor vehicle sales tax, called a privilege tax, goes from 5 percent to 6 percent.
