MORGANTOWN — A new event is coming Aug. 19 to Cheat Lake.

The first Cheat Lake Regatta, sponsored by Cheat Lake Rotary, will feature five races, live music and food.

All money raised will go to Cheat Lake Rotary’s community outreach fund, said event organizer Bron Kayal, owner of Crab Shack Caribba.

All races start at Crab Shack Caribba.

A canoe race kicks things off at 11 a.m., followed by a kayak race at 11:30 a.m. and a paddleboard race at noon. Also starting at noon is a “whatever floats” race.

Races are capped at 20 participants and equipment is not provided. Races cost $15 to enter.

At 1 p.m., the last race of the day starts. It’s called the Zero-K Race and involves no running.

“All the fun without the run,” Kayal said.

The Zero-K race will have live music by PopShop. The nonprofit music academy will host a battle of the bands, and offer giveaways, food and drinks.

Kayal said the event is family friendly and there will be face painting, a bounce house, balloon animals and a juggler.

Tickets for the Zero-K race are $25 or $5 for participants in other races.

The final event of the day will be the releasing of LED balloons over Cheat Lake, set for 9:30 p.m.
