MORGANTOWN — Fire officials believe Steven Malarkey poured gasoline, charcoal lighter fluid, Sterno lighter gel and kerosene on all three floors of his Morris Street home before setting it ablaze Aug. 10.

Malarkey, 65, and his wife — Linda Rae, 64 — were found dead in a second-floor bedroom as firefighters responded to the South Park fire. Both had suffered gunshot wounds. Police believe Steven Malarkey shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.

Morgantown Fire Marshal Ken Tennant said Aug. 11 that samples were sent away for testing to confirm the accelerants used, but containers for several substances were found amid the charred ruins of the home. Evidence also indicated that packing paper was used to help spread the fire, Tennant said.
