CHARLESTON — The opioid crisis looks to be a major theme for the Legislature this coming session, and legislators heard form a number of experts on Dec. 5 on the problem, solutions in the works and potential solutions they can play a role in.

To illustrate the problem, Joint Committee on Health co-chair Sen. Tom Takubo, R-Kanawha, shared a telling experience from his medical practice with the members.

He recently treated an overdose patient, he said, who spent $200,000 on heroin in the past year. Takubo wondered how he could raise that much cash.

The patient said he raised it by hacking people’s financial data and selling it on the Dark Web for Bitcoins. He used that income to mail order drugs from China and have it delivered to his door. He never had to go to the street.

“That blew my mind,” Takubo said.
