MORGANTOWN — A man pleaded not guilty to a dozen crimes for his role during a string of break-ins.

On May 18, Delmas Downey entered his plea before Monongalia County Circuit Court Judge Russell Clawges. He pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of breaking and entering and one count of attempted breaking and entering. The May term of the Mon County Grand Jury indicted him on the 12 charges.

John G. Simpkins Sr. and John G. Simpkins Jr. were initially charged for their roles in the break-ins. Their cases remain bound before the grand jury but were not presented during the most recent term.

In the fall, police said, Downey and the others broke into several businesses in the Cheat Lake area.
